Pre-Columbian, Honduras/El Salvador, Mayan Copador, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A polychrome pottery bowl with six scribes or lords sitting against backrests with outstretched arms as if presenting offerings, i.e. treasured books or implements to use in ballcourts of the Copan adorning the exterior walls. Elaborate headdresses, beaded collars, and ear spools underscore their elite standing. The interior features stylized turkeys with red tail feathers and necks strutting around the interior, dangling worms from their beaks. Size: 7.25" W x 3" H (18.4 cm x 7.6 cm)

Beyond the extensive iconography depicted on this example, the concave walls and convex bottom characteristic of Copador bowls make for a beautiful form, and let's not forget the attractive fluted ray pattern slipped in red on the underside. A lovely piece from the Mayan Copador.
