Description
Pre-Columbian, Honduras, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A highly decorated bowl from the southern Mayans of the Copan, brightly painted in hues of red, black, and orange. The exterior walls of this bowl feature a frieze of stylized four figures, perhaps scribes, with outstretched arms as if presenting offerings such as treasured boods or handcrafted implements to use in ballcourts of the Copan. Four stylized turkeys with red feathers strut around the interior walls of the bowl with worms dangling from their beaks. Even the bottom of the bowl is intriguing, with a quadrant-like cross motif surrounded by a band, all painted red against the orange ground. A wonderful piece! Size: 6.5" W x 2.75" H (16.5 cm x 7 cm)
