Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, Jaina Island, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A diminutive terracotta whistling figural statuette from Jaina Island or "Island of Kings." This short-statured man has a characteristic protruding chest, stunted limbs, and extended jawline typical of how dwarfism was displayed in Mayan culture. He is also wearing large and round earspools, a loincloth and waistband, an elaborate headdress, and a grandiose feline-form pendant on his chest. This hollow figure has a small vent hole near the back of his neck as well as a whistle mouthpiece behind his feet and a tone hole underneath his bottom. This figure has lost most of its decorative pigment; however, traces of yellow-orange coloration remain near its feet. Size: 1.625" L x 1.375" W x 3" H (4.1 cm x 3.5 cm x 7.6 cm).
Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA acquired from Arte Primitivo Gallery
