Description
Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, Honduras or El Salvador, Late Classic Maya, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A large pottery cylinder vase, in hues of coral and salmon, with a repeating carved glyph band encircling the upper portion. Columns of vertical glyphs in the style of large avian heads, possibly the feathered serpent god Quetzalcoatl, repeat in-between sections of vertical banded areas. A band of glyphs representing the same avian-form deity is seen on the bottom of the vessel, and the large and deep-welled body cavity would have possibly held offerings to this god. These glyphs would have had a significant meaning to their Mayan viewers, and would have represented their understanding of the world around them. Size: 4.625" W x 7.25" H (11.7 cm x 18.4 cm).
