Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Central America, probably Copan region, ca. 550 to 900 CE. Large pottery storage jar with large rounded base, short neck and wide rim. The body of the jar is decorated with a rabbit with long ears in high relief extending over the top of his head along with hands clasped to his chest. Given that 18 Rabbit was the most influential king of this region - coming to a bloody end 43 years after taking power - it is quite possible this jar was created in deference to this powerful figure. The rabbit is further enhanced with added white/tan pigment that shows he is wearing an elaborate cloak and this figure seems to be confined between two pillars. Size: 8-1/4"H x 7-1/2"W.

Provenance: Ex P. Davis via descent, acquired between 1985 and 1995
