Description
Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico and northern Central America, Mayan Territories, Late Classic period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. An interestingly-shaped Mayan jar with its interior and exterior burnished black over a coarse red clay. Incised lines form glyph-like artwork around the exterior rim, including one that looks like the feathered serpent head of the god Kukulkan (Quetzalcoatl to the Aztecs). The neck is straight-sided with an unpronounced rim; the body bulges outward and has a curved base, incised with a petal-like pattern to give it the appearance of a round-faced flower. All of the incised decoration has chalky red cinnabar giving it a bright color that stands out from the black surface. Size: 4.7" W x 4.25" H (11.9 cm x 10.8 cm)
