Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Ameca-Etzatlan Style, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a molded ceramic figure showing a woman with stylized facial features and an abstract form; she is kneeling with her hands over her swollen belly, almost certainly indicating an advanced stage of pregnancy. She has been interpreted as being in the act of giving birth. She has a large headdress and ear spools. Figures like this one were part of the West Mexican shaft tomb cultural tradition and would have been placed inside of large tombs beneath houses containing several generations of a single family. Figures like her are thought not to represent individuals, but idealized life stages or events. Size: 8-1/4" x 4-1/4" x 2-3/4" (21 cm x 10.8 cm x 7 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private New York Collection, ex-private Meza Ley collection
