Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Two lovely hand-built terracotta female figures, each standing atop arched feet, with attenuated limbs, wide hips, globular breasts, and rounded shoulders. Both women display characteristic Jalisco "sheepface" facial features such as elongated noses, coffee-bean-shaped eyes, pointed ears with round earspools, thin mouths, and tall foreheads with thin headbands; the taller figure has more pronounced eyes than those on the shorter figure. Each statuette displays areas of the original red-orange surface pigmentation, and both are wonderful examples of Jalisco figural artistry! Size of tallest figure: 4.5" H (11.4 cm).
Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery

Condition
Head of larger figure reattached with small chips along break lines. Both figures have surface wear commensurate with age, small chips to feet, arms, and heads, with fading and loss to surface pigmentation. Light earthen deposits within recessed areas, and mineral deposits throughout.
