**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Two great hand-built pottery figures from this ancient shaft-tomb culture. First is a standing male figure with attenuated limbs, rounded shoulders, and a large head with characteristic Jalisco "sheepface" qualities like a pointed nose and coffee-bean-shaped eyes; a tall forehead supports a thin headband with two roundels and a triangular crest. Second is a seated drummer with one leg wrapped underneath the other. He has broad shoulders, lengthy arms curled towards the head of a cylindrical drum, and white-painted embellishments such as a necklace and shoulder discs. His face displays similar facial qualities as the standing figure, though his headband is more minimalistic in appearance. Each figure is colored in a deep-red hue, imbuing them with a classic Western Mexican appearance! Size of largest (standing): 4.875" H (12.4 cm).

Both figures have surface wear commensurate with age, chips and fading to pigmentation, minor nicks and chips to extremities and faces, with light earthen and mineral deposits throughout.
