A BATAVIAN SILVER FILIGREE CASKET AND TEA CADDY, THE CASKET PROBABLY BATAVIA, 18TH CENTURY, THE CADDY WITH MARK OF REYNIER BRANDT, AMSTERDAM, 1777
On shaped apron, the body with side scroll handles, the hinged undulating cover with hinged clasp and holding chains, with tea caddy of plain rectangular form with sliding cover and beaded borders, in its original brass-mounted box, lined with bright blue silk and velvet, complete with two keys, marked to underside of the caddy
The first Dutch silver tea chests were made mainly in provincial silversmithing centres such as Haarlem and Friesland, as patrons in the 'big cities' preferred to keep their tea in porcelain or earthenware chests.
The origin of filigree chests is still largely a mystery, as the filigree technique was used in several countries over the centuries, although an Indonesian origin is often suggested in view of the trade connection with Holland. Jan van Campen in "Een kleine ronde draadwerkse doosie" en andere voorwerpen van zilverdraadwerk uit Azie" in: Aziatische kunst 31 mars 2001, pp. 36-53, attributes a group of boxes very similar to the one shown here to the city of Batavia. These chests were probably betel boxes, which were imported to Holland in the seventeenth century to be transformed into tea chests.
Several tea chests made by Reynier Brandt are known, including one dated 1754 sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, on 27 April 2004, lot 251.

Les premières boîtes à thé hollandaises en argent ont été fabriquées principalement dans les centres de production de province comme Haarlem ou encore en Frise, la clientèle des 'grandes villes' préférant conserver le thé dans des boîtes en porcelaine ou en faïence.
L'origine des coffrets en filigrane restent encore largement un mystère, la technique ayant été utilisée dans plusieurs pays au cours des siècles, pourtant une origine indonésienne est souvent suggérée au vu de la connexion commerciale avec la Hollande. Jan van Campen dans "Een kleine ronde draadwerkse doosie" en andere voorwerpen van zilverdraadwerk uit Azie" in : Aziatische kunst 31 mars 2001, pp. 36-53, attribue à la ville de Batavia un groupe de coffrets très proches de celui ici présenté. Ces coffrets étaient probablement des boîtes à bétel, qui furent importées en Hollande au XVIIe siècle pour y être transformés en coffrets à thé.
On connaît plusieurs boîtes à thé fabriquées par Reynier Brandt dont une datée 1754 vendue chez Christie's, Amsterdam, le 27 avril 2004, lot 251.
