Die Gegend um die Stadt Mons in Belgien stellte im 19. und 20. Jhd. eines der wichtigsten Steinkohlereviere Europas dar. Die Landschaft um die Anlage wurde zu einem Symbol der Industrialisierung und war auch sozialgeschichtlich entscheidend für die Arbeiterbewegung und den Klassenkampf Belgiens. Für den Bildausschnitt stellte Meunier die Industrielandschaft in den Mittelpunkt. Die Feuer leuchten in der Dunkelheit, Rauch steigt auf, die Borinage ist in Betrieb, aber Meunier verzichtet bei seiner Darstellung vollständig auf die Arbeiter. Die Borinage erscheint monumental, brachial, düster vom Rauch und Ruß der Kohle, als menschenfeindlicher Ort. Eine große Auffassungsgabe für den Moment bezeugt Meunier als Meister des Realismus und Naturalismus, er verlässt sich auf die bildgewaltige Wirkung der Anlage an und für sich. Die Faszination des Künstlers für diesen unwirklichen und doch so materialistischen Ort zeigt sich in der Wahl der Borinage als Hauptmotiv: Meunier setzte sich mit der Industrielandschaft Borinage seit seiner Ankunft in Mons 1880 mehrfach innerhalb seines Plastiken, Zeichnungen und Gemälde umfassenden Ouvres auseinander.Oil on canvas. The area around the city of Mons in Belgium was one of the most important coalfields in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. The landscape around the plant became a symbol of industrialisation and was also decisive in the social history of the labour movement and the class struggle in Belgium. Meunier placed the industrial landscape at the centre of the picture. The fires glow in the darkness, smoke rises, the borinage is in operation but Meunier completely dispenses the workers in his depiction. The borinage appears monumental, brute, gloomy from the smoke and soot of the coal, as a hostile place. Meunier is a master of realism and naturalism, relying on the powerful visual impact of the site in and of itself. The artist's fascination with this unreal and yet so materialistic place is also evident in his choice of the Borinage as his main motif: Meunier has explored the Borinage industrial landscape several times since his arrival in Mons in 1880 in his oeuvre of sculptures, drawings and paintings.1800
