Description

Great, scarce map of Maine from S. Augustus Mitchell’s true first edition of his New Universal Atlas. Shows the various disputed borders. This very map—this first edition—established the new Maine-Canada border after the 1842 treaty and is, thus, titled “A New Map of Maine.” Also shows the Revolutionary War border of 1783 and the line proposed by the King of Netherlands who was chosen as arbiter between the U. S. and Canada. Shows the first railroads in the state in red. Also shows canals, towns, rivers, lakes, bays, islands and other coastal features. Mitchell published his first edition of this atlas using the Carey & Hart decorative borders that were also used in the Tanner editions. He dropped them for the second printing later in 1846 and replaced them with his signature borders. This map came from the only Mitchell atlas to show these borders. Original hand coloring. Highly detailed. Typical light toning to outside edges. 12 x 15
