This auction of maps from the private collection of a long-time map dealer features lots dealing with the Civil War. All maps in this auction are original, vintage maps published on the dates indicated in the descriptions. There are no modern reproduction maps in the auction. Lots 17 to 45 are maps of the Civil War states published during the war, or official maps of the war published a few years later. Battle and campaign maps from Edward Ruger’s scarce 1875 book on the Civil War are offered, followed by larger maps from the Official 1891 Proctor atlas of the war, also quite scarce. In addition, contemporary war maps from Johnson & Browning’s scarce 1861 General Atlas and several 1860s Mitchell Atlas maps are also present. The very scarce 1846 Mitchell’s New Universal Atlas maps are included, plus maps from the 1860 Mitchell Jr. true first edition--extremely scarce because it lasted only a few short months before all the plates were changed. Herman Moll maps from his 1701 System of Geography will be found, along with nine maps from a scarce edition of Mathew Carey’s 1816 General Atlas and over a dozen maps from Anthony Finley’s scarce 1833 General Atlas (1830s Finley atlas maps are extremely scarce). Cowperthwait, Mallet, Seutter, Colton, Ogden, Werner, Cram, Gray, Hardesty, and Tunison round out this auction’s offerings.
