Description

Decorative and nicely engraved authentic vintage map dated 1855 and from the elusive 1869 edition of Colton's General Atlas. Major railroads of the time are clearly delineated and named. Covers the entire state as well as adjacent parts of Illinois and Kansas. In Kansas and the young state of Nebraska, various Indian tribes are still noted among the organized townships, including the Cherokees, Osages, Sacs and Foxes, Ottowas, Shawnees, and Delaware and Kickapoo Reservations. In the upper left-hand corner in Nebraska, an area where a group known and labeled as “Half Breeds” in earlier editions of this map have been displace. This was land claimed by descendants of early settlers to the region who intermarried with the Sacs and Fox tribe. Though not technically considered Indians, their claims to the lands were based upon earlier Indian claims and were later disputed by the regional government. An inset of St. Louis and the juncture of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers appears in the upper right. This fascinating map identifies cities, towns, forts, rivers, rapids, fords, and an assortment of additional topographical details. Hand colored to define county and state boundaries. Differs from earlier editions of the map by a few additional counties carved out of existing borders. Example—what had been just five counties in the bottom southwest area (Ozark, Taney, Stone, Green and Wright) now include Christian, Webster and Douglas Counties in the same geographical area. A clean and excellent example nicely centered and with just two pinpoint spots in the left margin. 13 x 15.75
