Item Details

Description

From an 1855 edition of Colton’s General Atlas. However, since the imprint of Johnson & Browning appears as publishers of the map, the atlas would have been published no earlier than 1856. Hand colored by county, showing an inset of San Francisco. Only 6 counties in Southern California, including San Diego, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Buena Vista, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. Shows explorers routes, detailed treatment of gold country, etc. Massive Fresno and Monterrey Counties. Many northern counties are also not yet formed. Excellent early detail throughout. Classic Colton decorative border. Covers the entire state of California. Inset map of San Francisco details major streets, buildings and piers as well as various proposed landfills all along the coastline. Shows a number of important emigrant and exploratory routes including Fremont's Route and three proposed routes for the Atlantic - Pacific Railroad. Identifies both the Beswith and Parke routes. Also identifies rivers, mountain passes, fords, and an assortment of additional topographical details. Original hand color. Light age toning. Light stains in lower right and bottom margins that barely touch frame. Light spot in open area of map. Spotting in upper right corner margin. Minor spotting in margin. Two small repaired edge tears. 12.75 x 15.75.
