Johnson’s Nebraska, Dakota, Idaho and Montana , Johnson & Ward, 1866. 17 x 23.25 inches. Significant and scarce Johnson map of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Dakota and Nebraska. The first Johnson map to incorporate Wyoming. This map was first introduced in 1865 because of interest in the region after the Civil War. Washington and Nebraska territories had been broken up into smaller territories during the war. Although American Indian nations weren’t happy about it, the region was becoming increasingly attractive for settlement and development. The proposed Governor Stevens route for the Northern Pacific Railroad passed through this region, as did the more favorable Central Pacific Railroad route and, to a lesser extent, the proposed Union Pacific Railroad route. Wyoming is still a territory (the lettering of the territory is in an outline typeface instead of the bold titles for Montana, Dakota, and Idaho.) The region was not officially incorporated as a territory until 1868. This early configuration also truncates the border with Montana at 44.5 degrees north latitude, giving Wyoming a curious western panhandle. Spectacular detail showing explorers routes, mines, American Indian Nations, springs, forts, mountain passes, and other geographical and political elements. Johnson shows all three proposed routes for the Pacific Railroad, the Emigrant Road, gold deposits in Montana and Idaho, Pike's Peak, Fremont's Peak, and Yellowstone Lake. Condition: horizontal tear from near centerfold to just above the 45 degree mark in the right frame repaired with archival tape and retouched (see accompanying photo with “Dakota”) otherwise near fine.
