J. Rafael, Zur 'Taxa Kaendler', in Keramos 203/204 (2009), p. 64 (illustrated)

The group is first mentioned in Reinicke's work reports in March 1745, when he began the model in clay. Kaendler's Taxa lists on 28 September 1745: '1. Grouppe. aus 3. Figuren bestehend, wie nehml. ein Podagraiste auf einen Canapeè sizet, und über seine Schmertzen schreyet, neben ihm befindet sich ein Frauenzimer, so ihm Bettgen unter die Beine leget, neben sich aber ein Kind hat, so brey aus einem Tiegel ißet' [1 group consisting of 3 figures, with a gout sufferer seated on a couch screaming in pain, next to him a woman laying cushions under his legs, next to her a child eating pap from a saucepan].

The group is also listed in Kaendler's work reports in October 1745: Eine Grouppe im Modell zerschnitten, Welche einen Podograisten so auf einem Cannapee schreyend sietzet, und ein Frauen Zimmer nebst unreschiedliche Wein Poutellien neben sich hat, zum Waaren Laager' [the model of a group cut up, in which a gout-sufferer is seated yelling on a sofa, and has a figure of a lady along with various wine bottles next to him, to the warehouse].

Based on the engraving 'La Courtisanne amoureuse' from jean de La Fontaine's Contes et nouvelles en vers, published in Amsterdam in 1685; or 'La courtisanne amoureuse', by Pierre Filloeul after Jean Baptiste Pater, from the series Suite de Larmessin, published in Paris in 1736.
