Thomas T. Craven (1873-1960) Admiral. Craven was Director of Naval Aviation after World War I and laid the groundwork for establishment of the Bureau of Aeronautics. He ordered the collier Jupiter converted into our first aircraft carrier, the USS Langley, 5 ¾”” x 9 ¾” typed letter signed, United States Fleet, April 12, 1935, to Mrs. W. A. Merritt. “…Enclosed is a copy of a letter to Professor Fitre…I trust that my communication may be of help and that Bill will Be able to enter M.I.T….”
