Description
Inscribed "1758 / Jonathan Hustid His Horn / Made in Canaan of Nor'k / FEBRUARY 22" (identified with Jonathan Husted, born c.1720 and resident of New Canaan, Fairfield Co., Ct., served in both French & Indian War and Revolution) with engraved decoration including a man hunting deer in a forest, a horse at a hitching post, a fancy silver service, and a flowering plant; shaved cow horn with recessed collar toward the mouth, with slightly domed wooden butt plug secured with brads and centering a nail for suspension (a wire staple also mounted at the edge of the horn), 9 3/8 in. L.
Provenance: From the estate of a Maryland collector. Purchased from William Guthman, May, 1994. Identified in the collection of H. W. Rorapaugh, Oxford, NY, in 1970s. Together with copies of various documentation.
