Description
Harry S. Truman
Washington, D.C., May 8, 1945
Harry Truman Signed German Surrender Proclamation Presented at Christmas, 1945
DS
A souvenir proclamation announcing the surrender of Germany, signed by the President as "Harry Truman" at the document's conclusion. Measuring 13.75" x 20.75" (visible), Washington, D.C., dated May 8, 1945. Beginning in part: "The allied armies, through sacrifice and devotion and with God's help, have wrung from Germany a final and unconditional surrender." Framed together with a 1945 Christmas card from the President and Mrs. Truman presenting it as a gift, measuring 14" x 22" overall. Features isolated soiling near top left, with surface creasing present to the document's upper half. Otherwise near fine, not examined outside of frame.
On the day before Hitler?s suicide, the entirety of German troops in Italy laid down their arms in surrender, and the remaining German forces in Holland, Denmark and northwest Germany surrendered to British Field Marshall Montgomery on May 4th, 1945. The Germans wanted a separate peace with the allied troops in the West in order to continue their battle with the Russians in the East, but such negotiations were denied. General Eisenhower ordered the Germans to surrender unconditionally, which they ultimately did, signing the surrender document on May 7th.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
