Description
Antique Indian Hindu Sanskrit Manuscript Leaf & Brass Nandi Temple Bell (ca. Mid-18th c. CE; 19th c. CE). Descriptions: 1) The framed Antique Sanskrit Leaf measures approx. 10.5”W x 5.5”H. It was salvaged from an antique Indian Hindu religious book. Hindu scriptures are written in Devanagari script. Deva means "deity", and nagari means "city". Many languages in India, such as Hindi and Sanskrit, use Devanagari and many more languages throughout India use local variants of this script. 2) The 3.5” Antique Hindu Nandi Bell was crafted in Orissa, India. It features the holy bull diety, Lord Nandi, at the top of the handle. Nandi bells are still used in Hindu household temples to worship deities, and to call them to bless the devotees. Shiva is believed to be the Lord of Cattle, and he takes shape of a bull whenever he travels the world to fulfill his divine roles as the Supreme Lord. Provenance: From the estate of Nancy Lassalle, NYC. She was a founding member of both the New York City Ballet & School of American Ballet boards, and an avid collector of antiquities.
