North America, United States, ca. early 19th century CE. An antique dome top trunk made of wooden panels covered in cowhide, brass rivet tacks, iron handles. The trunk has been restored ? the interior is painted green, the lid is held on with brass hinges, and a brass lock marked "FAM Paris." The lid was originally held in place with leather hinge straps and is a slightly domed shape to maximize storage space. This is a small chest that could have been used for short, overnight travel and to store personal items that needed safe keeping- such as heirlooms, dowries, and documents. In the 1830s, the boxier style with domed lids (like this example) were designed for wagon / stagecoach travel, and the hair-on hide covering was popular in the late 1700s and until the 1840s. This trunk may have been passed down through generations and was likely restored at the turn of the 20th century as suggested by the steamer trunk style lock. Size: 27" L x 14" W x 11.5" H (68.6 cm x 35.6 cm x 29.2 cm)

Condition

Repaired and restored with 20th century hinges and a 19th / 20th C. brass lock added. The interior is painted green, probably not original. The original leather hinge straps are absent. Wood, iron handles, iron plate, hide, brass tacks, and remaining leather are original. Age and use expected wear, tearing to hide and leather.
