Ancient Viking Iron Hoe Head & 16 Bronze Viking Artifacts (ca. 8th to 11th century CE). Size of Iron Head: 6.375"L x 3.75"W.The forged-iron hoe blade with a thick socketing shaft and a horizontal blade head efficient at moving large swaths of earth. The broad neck shows how this tool could withstand countless uses without sustaining much if any damage and would have been an incredibly important tool to the Viking culture. Though this tool was intended for utilitarian purposes, the blade edge could certainly could have doubled as a battle-ready weapon when a Viking’s preferred “Bearded Axe” was not readily accessible. Also included are unearthed ancient Scandinavian artifacts including: pendant cross, ring, warped bracelet, bells, latches, long nail, etc. Condition of Iron Head: Fully intact and enveloped with fine caramel- brown iron patina that is rather attractive; small chips to butt end; socketing shaft rim & blade head; has expected oxidation and pitting commensurate with age. Conditions of Artifacts: They have wear and losses as seen; much residual soil encrusted on them and natural patina. Provenance: ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics (Ann Arbor, MI).
