Silvered bronze, formed as the crescent moon with expanded tips representing Sol the sun and Mani, the moon. The tips are connected by two smaller crescents with the expanded joint terminal. The combination represented an astrological phenomenon or occurrence, now unknown. Additionally, the support is formed with four projections, probably representing the North Star, critical to navigation. At the time, stars were represented as four-pointed in the Roman tradition. As expert navigators, the constellations signified mystery and power to Vikings. Lunar pendants were worn as pectorals as well as suspended from belts, other clothing and horse harnesses. This example is 1.19” (under 1 ¼”) height. Made by the open face mold technique.
