Description
**First Time At Auction**
South Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely cast brass statue of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of good fortune, standing on an integral lotus shaped pedestal. Lakshmi has a finely incised cloth skirt and a bare torso, except for a thin band and necklaces that cover her breasts. The four arms symbolize the goals that humanity strives for: morality, wealth, love, and knowledge. The top hands hold two symbolic lotus flowers, and the lower hands make the abhaya mudra and varada mudra gestures to indicate no fear and gift giving. Her head is adorned with an ornate headdress and a protruding knob on the backside. Her visage is serene, and she stares impassively forward with almond shaped eyes. This sumptuous goddess of prosperity and happiness is also the wife and consort to Lord Vishnu. The details are remarkable on this figure, especially her ornaments and clothing! Size: 3" L x 2.8" W x 8.75" H (7.6 cm x 7.1 cm x 22.2 cm)
Provenance: ex- estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
