A. Lincoln Print, "The Nation's Martyr", Issued Shortly After Assassination
A framed print of President Lincoln following his assassination, printed by Currier and Ives. Measuring 11.5" x 15.5" (sight), New York, n.d. [ca. 1865]. A photorealistic lithograph portrait of the martyred President, printed shortly after his death. Captioned "Abraham Lincoln/The Nation's Martyr/Assassinated 14th 1865." Framed to the overall size of 14.5" x 18.5". Light toning throughout with scattered foxing and soiling. With a 2.25" tear to the upper right edge. Overall very good.
This 1865 portrait was based on a photograph taken in February 1864 by Anthony Berger. The Currier and Ives printing firm was known as the visual raconteurs of nineteenth-century America. Some of the finest artists of the day were engaged by the firm to produce a variety of prints, including images of newsworthy and major historical events. They would often recycle stock images for "rush printings" to chronicle such events. This tribute to Lincoln would have been quickly available to mourners all across America. Many variations of this print were issued by Currier and Ives, with as many as a dozen subtle differences in costume, hair, and direction in which Lincoln was facing.
