BANCROFT, GEORGE (1800-1891). A group of items related to George Bancroft incl. ALS.
1 1/4 page ALS ("Geo. Bancroft"). Washington, DC, January 1883. Addressed to Judge Blatchford. On personal stationery. Bancroft laments that he must cancel plans with Blatchford for the following evening. In part: "Accept my excuses benevolently, & be assured I am, ever most sincerely your friend by inheritance & by adoption." -- 4 x 5 1/2 in. (sight) vignetted bust portrait matted to 7 x 9 in. (toning, residue to image surface). Washington, DC: C. Parker. Image signed ("Geo. Bancroft"). Photographer's imprint beneath image. -- Autograph poem signed ("George Bancroft"). 17 February 1886. Accomplished on the page of an autograph album opposite a long inscription by the owner of the album, including biographical information about Bancroft. She writes, in part: "Bancroft made Washington his winter home the last seventeen yrs of his life his home was at 1623 H Street and it was there that I took my album and I had a pleasant little visit with him." -- 3 3/8 x 1 7/8 in. calling card for "Mr. Bancroft" with blue pencil inscriptions in an unknown hand. -- And 2 other items related to George Bancroft including Andrew McFarland Davis's George Bancroft. -- Together, 6 items signed by or related to George Bancroft.
George Bancroft was a noted American historian, writer, and politician, serving as Secretary of the Navy from 1845-1846, and as minister to the United Kingdom from 1846-1849 and Germany from 1867-1874.
