Regarding a medal and diploma awarded to Francis A. Walker by the International Geographical Congress. -- Letter signed ("Hamilton Fish") as Secretary of State. Washington, DC, 26 May 1876. Hamilton Fish served as the 16th Governor of New York, from 1849-1850, a US Senator from 1851-1857, and as 26th Secretary of State from 1869-1877 (Grant and Hayes administrations). He notably opposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, supported Abraham Lincoln as nominee for President, and helped raise funds for the Union effort during the Civil War. During his tenure as Secretary of State, he was a peacekeeper, being instrumental in the Treaty of Washington and handling the Virginus incident.

Hamilton Fish II served as the Speaker of the New York Assembly from 1895-1896, Assistant Treasurer of the United States from 1903-1908 (Theodore Roosevelt's administration), and a US Representative from New York from 1909-1911. Fish was a prominent New York Republican, with a great deal of influence over Putnam County.

Hamilton Fish III served as a member of the New York State Assembly, representing Putnam district, from 1914-1916, and as a US Representative from 1920-1945. As a Congressman, he notably involved in a number of foreign influence campaigns (he was named as a Nazi sympathizer by O. John Rogge), and was the first to deliver a speech calling for a declaration of war against Japan after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Hamilton Fish IV served as a US Representative from 1969-1995. As such, he notably voted in favor of 2 of the 3 articles of impeachment of Richard Nixon.
