Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca. Ca. 100 to 300 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished drum called a tambor with an open mouth to enable sound to escape. Unquestionably the most essential component of any musical troupe, the drummer would hold the tambor between their legs while rhythmically tapping, smacking, slapping, or otherwise hitting the surfaces of the drum. The russet-hued convex portion creates a higher-pitched sound than the body creates, meaning an expert tambor player could create myriad sounds during a single performance. Painted across the cream-hued midsection is an abstract lightning deity with lengthy arms and serpents emanating around its peripheries. Size: 5.5" W x 9.5" H (14 cm x 24.1 cm)
