Description
A rare tunic belonging to a soldier of the U.S. 369th Infantry, the 'Harlem Hellfighters', one of the first African-American regiments to serve with the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I, fighting with great distinction, and which also suffered the most losses of any American regiment, with 1,500 casualties. The tunic, constructed of OD green wool, bears a sewn on black patch with the insignia of the regiment, a coiled rattlesnake waiting to strike. Brass U.S. coat of arms insignia buttons are affixed to each shoulder strap, closed at the front by five similar buttons. The right sleeve bears a single gold chevron, indicating six months of service overseas, and a single faded red chevron, given for an honorable discharge. Attached to the collar are two insignia pins, including ‘USNA’ for army enlisted soldiers, and an infantry pin for ‘Company K’. The lining is completely intact and bears a size ‘38’ tag at the collar. A few minor moth nips, else in fine condition.
