Description
U.S. Model 1918 wool soldier's tunic issued to a member of the 92nd U.S. Infantry, the 'Buffalo Soldiers', a distinguished black regiment under white command which fought with great distinction during World War I, notably during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. The tunic bears all original buttons throughout, including pockets, and bears only two tiny moth holes at the bottom of the left breast pocket. A hand-made 'buffalo' division patch constructed of three pieces has been hand-sewn to the left shoulder, above a red discharge stripe and green overseas service stripe, both of which were also rather crudely sewn to the garment. A worn World War I Victory Medal with 'Meuse-Argonne' and 'Defensive Sector' clasps is pinned to the left breast, just beneath its matching ribbon with two battle stars. Beside it, the soldier pinned a captured ring, aluminum with a brass Prussian crown on its flat face, no doubt taken from a prisoner. Overall in fine condition - very rare.
