Description
c. 1863 Carte de visite portrait of a seated Civil War African American soldier. Photographer: Edwin Allen of New Orleans, Louisiana.

Wonderful portrait of a seated of African American Civil War soldier who stares determinedly at the camera's lens. Though the subject is unknown, he wears insignia denoting he was a non-commissioned officer. The carte's verso bears the imprint of a New Orleans' photographer, dating this view to after that city was taken by Union forces (May, 1862).

Previously enslaved African American men throughout the south joined United States' Colored Regiments in droves as the war progressed. For many, it was their first act of autonomy and a means to provide for themselves after emancipation.
