Description
This is an excellent Hidatsa Native American Indian porcupine quilled pipe tamper from the Sundog Bruce VanLandingham collection. The piece exhibits an artfully carved wood pipe tamper that is wrapped in porcupine quillwork showing colors of yellow and purple. The top has Indian tanned hide fringes that are sinew sewn showing additional porcupine quill quillwork in colors of light blue, yellow and purple with small rolled tin jingle dangle cones with purple dyed plume feathers. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and acquired by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery. The piece shows some slight porcupine quill loss but overall good condition. It has the original tag marked, "HIDATSA PIPE TAMPER C. 1880'S $750 BV0776 SUNDOG FINE ART." The tamp measures 9.5"L with an additional 7.5"L fringes.*
