Featured in this lot is this 1940s National Vendor Company Cigarette Vending Machine manufactured in St. Louis, Missouri. The National Vendors Company, which had its headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri, produced the well-known National Vendors Cigarette Vending Machine Model 9. The late 1940s saw the introduction of the Model 9, which went on to become one of the most popular offerings for the business. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, The National Vendors Company produced cigarette vending machines, but it eventually shifted its attention to other vending machine types, like snack and beverage vending machines. A more compact and portable version of the machine, the Model 9 with 7 options, was created to be used in places with limited space, like bars and restaurants. Additionally, it was entirely mechanical, operated by a lever and cam mechanism, and was renowned for its durability. The Model 9 7-selection version included security features like a locking mechanism and an anti-theft device, just like the larger version of the Model 9. With a capacity of 12 packs per brand, it could accommodate up to 7 different cigarette brands. The vending machine shows a large mirror on the top of the vending machine. On the right side of the mirror it reads "Insert Money Below" in white lettering against a black background. It also tells the user on which coins to use if they were wanting to buy a 40 cent pack of cigarettes. To the left of the mirror it reads, "Thank You" in white lettering against a maroon background. Below the mirror, it reads, "Cigarettes" in red cursive lettering with the selections directly beneath it. This was the smaller version of the Model M9 and featured seven different selections with each selection holding up to twelve extra packs. Bellow the selections it tells the user on how to operate the vending machine and shows prices underneath that. The selections included are as follows: Lucky Strike, Camel, Chesterfield, Pall Mall, Old Gold, Viceroy and Phillip Morris. Below the selections are pull levers used to select the desired product after inserting the coins. Underneath the pull levers is the drop area where you could retrieve your product. The base of the machine shows a locking device and the very bottom features a pressed metal logo reading, "National" in cursive lettering. The machine shows a maroon and beige color scheme with chrome metal accents throughout. The machine shows good condition with some wear and fading to the paint but no obvious signs of damage are noted. The mirror is in good condition as well and no other glass sections show cracks or chips. The machine has not been tested for functionality. The vending machine measures 12 1/2" L x 23 1/4" W x 61 1/2" H.
