Native American, Western United States, Montana, Blackfeet Nation, ca. late 20th to 21st century CE. A hair roach, an iconic adornment of Native American plains and eastern tribes, made from a knit or woven wool yarn spreader, a leather panel, porcupine guard hairs, and magpie feathers with a tuft of rabbit fur. The feathers are held in place with a wooden tube, one set in front of the other. This is a modern powwow roach, and therefore may be a blend of styles and heritage, but traditionally roach types could indicate the wearer's status or dance it was used in. The pair of feathers suggest this may have been intended for a Prairie Chicken Dancer - the male prairie chicken has a unique courtship display and distinctive horn like feather tufts that stand vertically up - like the feathers on this roach.
