Description
Originally such beaded heads or Atwonzen represented trophy heads, namely the skulls of enemies felled in battle. Underneath the beading was the skull, where later on they were made from wood. These are associated with powerful otherworldly forces. Atwonzen we're only found in the house of a MFO, or chief and in some literature were also used at the funeral of the chief or his mother. This example measures 9 inches tall. Bamileke peoples, Cameroon Grasslands, West Africa. provenance: The Prof. Gould collection, New York.
