US Navy Mark V Schrader Diving Helmet October 1943 USN Stamped
US Navy Mark V Schrader Diving Helmet October 1943 USN Stamped
Item Details
Description

This helmet was made by the famed and iconic manufacturer A. Schraders Son Company. Located in Brooklyn, New York, this company started making diving helmets and related equipment in the 1840s. Throughout the 19th Century, they would improve upon diving helmet design and become a supplier to the US Navy. During the early 20th Century, their helmets would utilize the latest techniques in design and safety. Schrader would go on to be a major supplier of the famed Mark V from 1916 till after World War II. The Mark V is considered by many to be the most iconic diving helmet ever made.

This Mark V was made during the month of October 1943. It is serial #815B. This same matching number is also stamped on the underside of all four brails. The top of the helmet (bonnet) was also made by Schrader but is serial number 1251. This number is on the communications cup. The helmet also has a US Navy inspection stamp present on the communications cup. This stamp proves the helmet was inspected and put into US Navy inventory in 1943.

The helmet is in complete condition and even has a few extras. All four matching brails are present, along with 12 correct wing nuts, and 4 copper brail shims. Spitcock valve, exhaust valve, air fitting and communications, window guards and glass are all intact. There is one brass window guard screws twisted off. The dumbbell safety latch is a WWII era BTE replacement but does not have the bolt and wing nut to secure it in place. A non-return valve with USN inspection stamp is present. A communications elbow cap is present. Neck ring gasket has been removed. There are two air control valve brass rings secured by wing nuts.

The helmet does feature the typical working dents on the top of the bonnet. None of the dents penetrate the copper body. There are a couple that are larger, but not visually distracting. The communications elbow is slightly pushed in. Inside the bonnet, the original air vents are present. In addition, a vintage reproducer (speaker) can also be found still hooked up. The helmet has a wonderful patina to the copper body and brass hardware. The helmet has been lacquered to preserve that appearance.

This helmet along with other items listed in this auction, belonged to 20 year veteran of the US Navy and one of the first 100 Navy Seals. A custom certificate stating the veterans name and his ownership of this item will be included.

The helmet will be accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity detailing its history. A matching serial numbered hologram decal on the inside of the helmet from Nations Attic will be applied as well to preserve the helmets history and authenticity. The display stand shown in the photos is not included. The option to purchase one after the auction will be provided.

All items will be shipped with a signature required upon delivery and full insurance either via FedEx or the USPS Priority Mail. Worldwide shipping is available; however, no ocean freight will be offered on large items. DHL Express is an option for international shipments under 600 pounds via air. Payment via bank wire for customers outside the USA is required. A shipping quote prior to the auction can be provided by emailing your postal code.
