1943 Schrader USN Mark V Diving Helmet w/ Navy Stamp
1943 Schrader USN Mark V Diving Helmet w/ Navy Stamp
Item Details
Description

Arguably the most desirable and collected diving helmet in the world, the United States Navy Mark V. This example was made by the A. Schraders Son Company, Division Of Scovill Mfg. Co. Schrader was one of the original two companies to manufacture the Mark V for the US Navy starting in 1916. Schrader would land numerous contracts during World War 2 to produce the Mark V.

As shown in the photos, this helmet features an unmistakable patina of a helmet that has seen lots of underwater adventures long ago The bonnet and breastplate thread together with ease. Numerous working dents are present on the bonnet and breastplate. Areas of dark brown, green, and dark red copper are visible throughout the body of the helmet. A large piece of rope tied intricately on the front of the breastplate along with some brass clips really add to the helmets overall visual appeal.

Crucial to Mark V helmets are the serial numbers. This Schrader is technically a serial number matching example, but one component featuring the number is gone. Schrader would place the serial number on the ID plate, on the bottom side of all four brails, and the communications cup bottom edge during World War 2. This helmet features number 694B on the four brails and communications cup on the bonnet. Unfortunately, the original ID plate has had all its details removed. With the breastplate having all four brails match the bonnet, there leaves little doubt this example is a serial number matching Mark V. The serial number 694B does place production of this helmet to September or October 1943.

This helmet does feature a US Navy inspection stamp. The inspector at the Schrader factory would place the symbol on the top edge of the communication cup. This helmet features the stamp in that spot and is proof the helmet was inspected and accepted into US Navy inventory!

The helmet has all four serial # matching brails, 12 wing nuts, window guards, glass, air & communications fittings, spitcock, and exhaust valve. Inside the bonnet, the internal air vents are all present, as well as the exhaust button. The remnants of a WWII era reproducer with cloth covered wire is still attached inside the bonnet. The dumbbell safety latch is present, no retaining latch, chain or cotter pin though. Also, the bastard stud is the same length as the others. The helmet has a non-return valve. The communications elbow also has a cap that was placed on helmets when not in use. The divers right side window guard does have a small break. Overall this is a great World War II Mark V that was in US Navy inventory and without a doubt was part of a lot of hard work!

All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity.
