Arguably the most desirable and collected diving helmet in the world, the United States Navy Mark V. This example was made in August 1943 by the A. Schraders Son Company, Division Of Scovill Mfg. Co. Schrader was one of the original two companies to manufacture the Mark V for the US Navy starting in 1916. Schrader would land numerous contracts during World War 2 to produce the Mark V.

Unlike almost all US Navy Mark V diving helmets still in existence, this one has its story etched onto the underside of the breastplate! According to the details etched into the edge of the breastplate the helmet was used to dive the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor on October 9th, 1943. Subsequent dives in October and November 1943 are noted. The initials RBJ USN are present and likely the diver who used this helmet. Other locations etched appear to be Maui la, Tarawa, and possibly Maunaloa. There also appears to be the duplicated initials RBJ & CLS (not sure on first letter). This information is fascinating, and with further detailed research, more details may be discovered, making this helmet even more special than it already is.

An important detail on Mark V helmets is the serial numbers. During 1943 Schrader would place the serial number on the ID plate and on the bottom side of all four brails. This helmet features the number 493B on the ID plate and all four brails. The bonnet of this helmet was made by DESCO and is serial number 3005, dating it to 1945.

The helmet has all four brails, 12 wing nuts, window guards, glass with original red lead sealant, air & communications fittings, spitcock, exhaust valve, and dumbbell safety latch and chain. The cotter pin on the chain does not engage into the hole. Inside the bonnet, the internal air vents are all present, as well as the exhaust button. There is one brass screw on the faceplate guard twisted off. There is no neck ring gasket. Due to the mismatch of the bonnet and breastplate, threading the two halves together takes a few attempts to get the threads to line up. Numerous very shallow working dents, none severe, are evident on the top of the bonnet.

Based on the helmets overall matching patina, it’s likely been together since the end of World War 2. Regardless, the etched history of where this helmet operated at the height of World War II really brings it to life in our opinion. As can be seen in the photos, with the helmet at a slight angle, people can view the etchings and be told of its incredible adventures, something most helmets can not offer!

All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity. The display stand shown in the photos is not included.
