Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi Province, Jamacoaque (also Jama Coaque or Jama-Coaque) culture, ca. 500 CE. A delightful pottery figure of an elaborately-adorned male wearing an avian-esque headdress, a beaded necklace with a crescent-shaped pendant, huge earspools, a giant nasal ornament, an intricate belt, bangles, anklets, and a loincloth. Seated with legs crossed, the figure places both hands on knees and faces forward. His massive head displays half-moon eyes, a curved nose, and an incised smile, all flanked by a pair of projecting ears with fringed peripheries. Size: 7.5" W x 13.8" H (19 cm x 35.1 cm)

What a fascinating figure! Meisch writes, in "Costume and History in Highland Ecuador" (2011), "Jama-Coaque male headdresses are often extremely elaborate and covered with whole birds, feather panaches, or whole shells..." Headdresses, jewelry, and styles of dress were all signifiers of rank and social status within many pre-Columbian societies; to a member of the Jamacoaque, this figure probably had even deeper meaning.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010; ex-private T. Misenhimer collection, Beverly Hills, California, USA, collected from 1970-2008
