Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Sumer, ca. 3rd to early 2nd millennium BCE. A remarkable pottery figure of a male shown seated. Positioned with knees bent as though sitting on a chair, the ancient figure gazes outward from a pair of bulging, annular, applied eyes flanking a pinched nose, all capped by a thick headband or hood with an incised hem. A lengthy beard flows down his chest, while a fluffy coiffure sticks outwards from below his headdress, lying atop his square shoulders. The fascinating fellow bends both arms at the elbows in order to hold both hands gently at his chest. Size: 1.6" W x 2.3" H (4.1 cm x 5.8 cm)
