Description
**Originally Listed At $125**
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi Province, Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque or Jama-Coaque), ca. 500 CE. A hollow mold-formed pottery figure of an older woman seated with her legs crossed and a skirt across them. She wears a huge, curved headdress and a cape that fastens at the neck, and is dotted with pale blue and yellow pigment. Fascinatingly, her face is depicted with wrinkled (lined) skin to indicate advanced age - a rare subject in Jamacoaque art. Who was this woman? Based on her clothing she must have been someone important - perhaps a shaman, queen, or respected elder. Size: 2.1" W x 3.35" H (5.3 cm x 8.5 cm)
Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
