Description
**Originally Listed At $900**

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Aztec Empire, ca. 1400 to 1521 CE. A striking hand-carved stone sculpture of a seated figure, possibly a deity, displaying a large, stylized head capped with a sizeable headdress. Sitting on a small stool with hands on his knees, the fascinating figure stares forward from almond-shaped eyes beneath an arched brow. His expressive visage exhibits a prominent nasal bridge, a broad nose, a mouth held slightly open as though gasping in amazement, and a pointed chin. The hefty headdress towers over his body, showcasing an incised geometric motif. His delineated fingers and toes render him as detailed as he is dramatic! A splendid example from ancient Aztec culture! Size: 5.125" L x 3.375" W x 8.125" H (13 cm x 8.6 cm x 20.6 cm)

Aztec stone sculpture is a culmination of centuries of stone carving in Mesoamerica, and, using fragile volcanic stone, these ancient artists were able to create remarkably detailed and poignant artworks. Based on the figure's pose, this is almost certainly a male deity. The Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History substantiates this masculine designation by explaining how deity figures were "customarily shown in frontal view and strictly symmetrical, females are frequently kneeling, while male figures are often sitting with their knees drawn up and their arms crossed upon them." Along with youthful faces, half-open mouths, and other stylized features, Aztec people would have instantly known who this god was and what it meant to see him in his place of honor.
