Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A delightful pottery figure, hand modeled to form a seated person with coffee-bean shaped eyes, a bald, pointed head, and a large nose. Sitting between his legs is a mortar with a deep basin; he holds a pestle and appears to be in the act of grinding something - perhaps hallucinogenic substances for a ritual. Size: 3" W x 4.6" H (7.6 cm x 11.7 cm)
Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966

Condition
Lower body has been repaired/restored from a few small pieces. This is well done and largely unobtrusive. Otherwise in nice condition with interesting remaining pigment and rich deposits.
