Field Marshal Jan C. Smuts ALS 2 Years Before Becoming Prime Minister

2pp of a bifolium, measuring 4.5" x 7", Pretoria, South Africa, dated August 13, 1937. Signed "JC Smuts" and addressed to Sir Lewis L. Fermor, thanking him for sending a number of publications to him. Reading in part: "Many thanks for your paper on Human History and Loc. History which I hope to read with much interest and enlightenment. Having met you personally will add to the intrinsic interest…" Accompanied by the original envelope, hand-addressed by Smut, with two South African postage stamps and stamped "Department of Justice" on the front. The letter has flattened mail folds and is boldly signed, near fine. Expected wear and soiling to the transmittal cover.

Field Marshal Jan Christian Smuts (1870-1950) was a South African stateman, soldier, and philosopher. During the Second Boer War he helped negotiate the Treaty of Vereeniging, which ended the war, and he serve as a defense minister for the Union Defense Force during WWI. Smuts would later serve two terms as prime minister of the Union of South Africa, from 1919-1924 and again from 1939-1948.
