Description
Bean, Lovell & Borman Signed Apollo 8 Limited Ed. "Homeward Bound" Print

A limited edition print after an original acrylic painting by Alan Bean (1932-2018), Apollo 12 and Skylab 3 astronaut and amateur artist, entitled "Homeward Bound," ca. 1994. The print is signed and numbered by Bean in pencil, as "Alan Bean" and "365/550" in the lower right corner. The print is also signed by two of the three Apollo 8 crew members: Commander Frank F. Borman II (born 1928), as "Frank Borman / Apollo 8 CDR" and by Command Module Pilot James A. Lovell (born 1928), as "Jim Lovell / Apollo 8 CMP" at upper left. The print is also signed in stone as "Alan Bean / © 1994" at the lower left. The limited edition print was published by The Greenwich Workshop, Inc. (Shelton, Connecticut). Printed in vivid colors and matted and framed, not examined out of the frame. Labeled "Novaspace Galleries" verso. The sight size of the print is 17.375" x 18.75" while the overall frame size is 25.875" x 27.75" x 1."

The print signed by three astronauts is accompanied by a generous amount of provenance information including: two Certificates of Authenticity from Novaspace Galleries (Tucson, Arizona) stating that Lovell and Borman each signed the print on November 8-9, 2003 and August 26, 2005 respectively; a Certificate of Authenticity from the Greenwich Workshop relating to the printmaking process; and two DVDs presumably about Borman and Lovell's career, unviewed.

"Homeward Bound" is Bean's depiction of the Apollo 8 spaceship as it "emerges from behind the moon this last time with the welcome voice of Jim Lovell announcing 'Please be informed, there is a Santa Claus.'"

The Greenwich Workshop Certificate of Authenticity states in part: "This Greenwich Workshop limited edition print has been produced from the artist's original oil [acrylic] painting by the Stevenson Color Separators. The artist has approved the proofs and techniques used in the production of this print; each print has been personally approved and signed by the artist, countersigned, and consecutively numbered..."

The Apollo 8 mission, conducted over December 21-27, 1968, was the first human space flight to reach the moon. Along with Commander Borman and Command Module Pilot Lovell, the 3-person crew included Lunar Module Pilot William A. Anders (born 1933). The crew studied the far side of the moon and photographed the iconic image known as "Earthrise."

Alan Bean went to space twice; the first time as Lunar Module Pilot during the November 14 - 24, 1969 Apollo 12 mission, and the second time as Commander of the July 23 - September 25, 1973 Skylab 3 mission.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
