ARCHAISTIC COLLECTION
蓋爐以整料和闐玉原石雕琢，造形仿自商周青銅方彛而略有增減變化。器分蓋與爐兩部分，呈長方體，四角皆出戟飾以扉棱，淺浮雕獸面紋為地，獸面呈「臣目」，眼上眉線向內翻捲，一派複刻的擬古風格，中間再高浮雕獸面，完整展現紋飾繁複優美及奇特的造形設計。蓋呈四坡簷，頂圓雕鳳鳥為鈕，呈仰首蹲姿，頭頂花翎，橄欖眼，尖喙，身形飽滿，雙足收於腹部，羽翅豐滿攏於體側，上飾細羽絲紋，長尾下垂，雍容華貴。爐口緣中央、肩兩側皆飾有高浮雕獸首銜活環，瑞獸兩耳向後直立，雙目前望，形象遒勁生動。下承外撇高足，足牆以雙勾技法雕琢，每面均飾以壓地隱起雙螭龍紋，下承二方連續雲雷紋一周。全器處處彰顯古拙之韻，雅致脫俗，具宮廷製玉風範，作為文房清供，於富麗中增添典雅之姿，實為精彩。
香爐是清代宮廷陳設觀賞器，亦作焚香之用。焚香於文人乃是雅事，古法焚香，源自宋元文人雅士聞香與參禪的態度，陳去非《焚香》：「明窗延靜晝，默坐消塵緣；即將無限意，寓此一炷煙。」可見文人在「香」的意境中別有一番領悟。清代玉爐製作為明代玉爐演變而來，如清宮舊藏，北京故宮博物院庋藏明〈青玉龍耳獸面紋出戟爐〉，其形制、技法皆與本品極為相似，即是一例，可資參考。
又乾隆皇帝極為慕古，仿古之風遠邁前代，形成上行下效之風潮。本件蓋爐仿青銅作品，為追求形神備具，仿古藍本可見欽定四庫全書－西清古鑑、卷十三．周〈邢侯方彛〉，其風格意蘊上雖仿古，但在形制和紋飾上則有所創新，增加裝飾效果，且在器身琢刻出變形獸面紋、夔龍紋、夔鳳紋等紋飾來變化出各種不同的風格，除追慕淳樸古風、修養德行外，也象徵聖王時代，亦使玉雕達到前所未有的高峰。整器造形莊重，構圖緊湊飽滿，繁而不亂，樣式古樸而有新意，極具裝飾性與神秘感，彰顯富麗堂皇的豪奢氣息，其琢工、打磨技法均一絲不苟，法度精嚴，洵是十八世紀玉雕陳設中的難得佳器。
