Description

Civil War Naval Archive of 5 Documents Signed by Welles, Dahlgren, etc.

A group of five naval documents signed by prominent Civil War Era military and political figures. Three of the five are war-dated, the group dating from 1832-1868, and all but one are addressed to Captain James C. Williamson. All with flattened folds, with varying degrees of toning, soiling, and foxing throughout. There is a small amount of chipping to some, with additional separations at the folds. Overall, very good. The archive includes the following:

1. "Gideon Welles" Signed Document. 1p of a bifolium, measuring 7.75" x 9.5", [New York] Naval Department, dated August 14, 1861. Addressed to Lieutenant Williamson aboard the U.S. Steam Sloop of War "Brooklyn" in Key West, Florida. Welles directs Williamson to return to New York aboard the U.S. Steamer "Connecticut" and report to the Department upon arrival.
2. "S.F. DuPont" Signed Document. 1p of a bifolium, measuring 7.5" x 9.5", Flag Ship "Vermont", Port Royal Harbor, dated July 22, 1862. Addressed to Commander J.H. Strong aboard the W.S.S. "Flag". Dupont sends copies of letters regarding an issue of leakage aboard the "Flag" and asks that further copies be made.
3. "JA Dahlgren" Signed Document. 1p, measuring 8.25" x 13.75", Flag Ship "Philadelphia", Port Royal Harbor, dated August 19, 1864. Addressed to Commander Williamson aboard the "Flag". Dahlgren asks Williamson to review a sailor's qualifications for promotion to Acting Ensign of the Navy.
4. "Levi Woodbury" Signed Printed Letter. 1p of a bifolium, measuring 7.75" x 9.5", [New York] Naval Department, dated January 7, 1832. Addressed to James C. Williamson, appointing him an Acting Midshipman in the Navy of the United States.
5. "Robt C. Shenck" Signed Document. 1p of a bifolium, Washington, D.C., dated March 3, 1868. Addressed to Captain Williamson in regards to House Bill No. 196.

Navy Union Captain James C. Williamson (1813-1871) was appointed to the Navy in 1832 as a midshipman and served in a variety of posts including Executive Officer of the USS "Brooklyn". Over the course of his career he commanded the USS "Wyandotte", the USS "Perry", the USS "Penguin", the USS "Flag", and the USS "Dai Ching". As commander of the "Penguin", he served in the East Gulf Blockading Squadron from 1862-63, and then was transferred to the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron from 1864-65. He gained the rank of captain in October 1866.
