Dealer's Lot, Military Notables, 10 Pc. War Archive

A superb dealer's lot of photographs, letters, first day covers, and other documents signed by military notables from the Civil War to World War II, circa 1945 through 1981. Items have expected wear and range from very good to near fine. Please see catalog photos for additional information relating to content and condition.

The archive includes, in alphabetical order by last name:

1. U.S. Army General Mark W. Clark (1896-1984) Typed Letter Signed, “Mark W. Clark”, 1p, on “The Citadel” letterhead, 8.5” x 11”, Charleston, August 24, 1977. Includes original mailing envelope.

2, 3, 4. German Admiral Karl Donitz (1891-1980) set of three typed documents: souvenir typescript in German, 8.5” x 11”, Headquarters, May 6, 1945, signed “Donitz / 18.8.78”; souvenir typescript in English, 8.5” x 5.25”, Berlin, May 1, 1945, signed, “Donitz”; and souvenir typescript in English, 8.5” x 11”, Rheims, May 7, 1945, signed “Donitz / 8 Nov 1966”. 

5. World War II “Horrors of War” Card signed by Japanese Navy Commander Kohei Hanami (1909-1994) and Australian Coastwatcher Lieutenant Arthur Reginald Evans (1905-1989). Slabbed and authenticated by Famous Fabrics, Inc.

6. U.S. Army Air Force Captain Robert A. Lewis (1917-1983) signed first day cover, “Capt Bob Lewis / Aug 6, 1945 / Hiroshima”. Postmarked March 15, 1981, San Francisco, CA. 6.5” x 3.5”. Authenticated and slabbed by PSA/DNA to a size of 9.5” x 4.5”.

7. U.S. Army Private Joseph L. Lockard (1922-2012) photograph signed and inscribed, “Opana Radar Site Detected / Japanese Planes Enroute / to Pearl Harbor / December 7, 1941 / Joseph L. Lockard”. Glossy black and white 11” x 8.5” photograph is signed in blue felt tip.

8. Jean Marie MacArthur (1898-2000), second wife of Army General Douglas MacArthur, Typed Letter Signed, “Jean MacArthur”, 1p on a bifold sheet of Waldorf Astoria “The Tower” stationery, 5.25” x 7”, New York, January 7, 1971. Includes original transmittal envelope.

9. U.S. Army Soldier Huston J. Riley (191[1]-2011) in the surf at Omaha Beach, captured by war photographer Robert Capa for LIFE Magazine, June 6, 1944. Black and white 10” x 8” photograph signed “Huston J. ‘Hu’ Riley” in blue felt tip. Certificate of Authenticity from PSA/DNA.

10. Civil War General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Wheeler (1836-1906) handwritten envelope, addressed to “Misses Wheeler / Wheeler / Lawrence County / Alabama”. Postmarked February 27, 1905, Cleveland, OH. 6.5” x 3.5”. Certificate of Authenticity from JSA. Accompanied by a 5” x 7” black and white photograph of General Wheeler, which has been reproduced in a striking 8” x 10” colorized photograph, also included.
