Description

1848 "Doniphan's Expedition" with Santa Fe Content and Fold-Out Map

"Doniphan's Expedition; Containing An Account of the Conquest of New Mexico" by John T. Hughes. Cincinnati: J. A. & U. P. James, 1848. First edition, containing the foldout map. Twelvemo, xii, 13-407pp. Illustrated with frontispiece steel engravings of Doniphan and Price. Additional illustrations throughout and five engraved plates, including Santa Fe and environs and the battle plan of Sacramento. The foldout map is present but has been detached. The map, measuring 10" x 13.5", is entitled "A New Map of Mexico, California & Oregon." Signed on the front free end page, "Moses M. Granger Zanesville, Ohio. Presented to the Philomathesian Society by Moses M. Granger." Brown cloth-covered boards with a gilt stamped flag and cannon illustration on the front cover. Gilt stamped title on spine. Some edge wear and faded spots to the brown cloth, and the cracked spine has been repaired. Bumping to the corners and spine edges. Light dampstaining and scattered foxing to the text and portraits. The map has some small tears and tape repairs, along with minor toning.

Alexander William Doniphan (1808-1887) was a 19th-century American attorney, soldier and politician from Missouri. He received much acclaim leading American troops during the Mexican–American War and participated in General Kearny's capture of Santa Fe and the invasion of northern Mexico (now modern-day New Mexico). Doniphan is perhaps best known, however, for preventing the summary execution of Joseph Smith, founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, at the conclusion of the 1838 Mormon War.
